Symptom Management
We offer symptom control stays where our Paediatric Palliative Care Consultants can help children and young adults manage their symptoms.
If a child or young adult is struggling with their symptoms, we can offer support from our Specialist Palliative Care Team.
This may involve organising outpatient appointments or a symptom management stay.
Staying in-house for a few days enables our Doctors and Clinical Nurse Specialist to make a full assessment of the symptoms and concerns, through observation and ongoing consultation with the young adult or parents/guardians of the child visiting. Our consultants can then develop a bespoke plan to manage these symptoms, with some time to assess the result of any new or changed therapies, before the child or young adult goes home.
Often our specialist physiotherapist is also able to help with symptom management strategies.
Our Paediatric Palliative Care Consultants are part of the Specialist Palliative Care team at Southampton Hospital and this can sometimes lead to the request for a symptom management stay for a child who has challenging symptoms.
